New Energy Label for Electronic Devices

New Energy Label for Electronic Devices Debuts Today, June 20, 2025

Starting today, June 20, 2025, tablets and smartphones (as well as other devices) sold on the European market must come with a new energy label.
The label—similar to those already used for household appliances and other equipment—will assess the device’s energy efficiency and other key aspects, such as battery life (which must retain at least 80% capacity after 800 charging cycles), availability of spare parts, resistance to drops, scratches and water, and the ease of repair, including by the end user.
Each product will receive a score from A to G, with A representing the highest performance and sustainability.

This initiative, promoted by the European Commission, aims to increase transparency and encourage the production and purchase of longer-lasting, more easily repairable electronic devices.
Which devices will feature the label?
The label will be mandatory for smartphones (with cellular or satellite connectivity), cordless home phones, feature phones (devices used only for calls and SMS), and tablets with screens between 7 and 17.4 inches.
Excluded from the requirement are devices with flexible screens and “hybrid” tablets with a keyboard and an operating system similar to a computer (e.g., Windows), as well as, naturally, products already on the market before today.

This measure is part of a broader European objective to strengthen the so-called “right to repair,” giving consumers better tools to reduce waste and extend the useful life of their devices. Too often, smartphones and tablets are replaced not because of major failures, but due to fixable malfunctions or obsolescence caused by overly demanding software updates.

For us as fastener manufacturers, this means being involved in the design phase with OEM to define repairability parameters and the use of screws or nuts designed for repeated use.

We cannot say whether the world will finally move away from the mantra of consumerism. But at F.lli Mauri SpA, we are trying to contribute to reducing waste across every sector thanks to cold forging technology.
